Sturgis Sunday

It has been hard to find time to update this so I will try and catch up the past few days activities.

We left Sioux Falls SD around 9:00 am on Sunday, had to stop as we got on the highway to put on leathers as it was still too cool for us... most everyone else did the same. I 90 in eastern SD is undergoing some badly needed repairs, lots of patch work, uneven lanes and single lane riding... not much fun in a car, less fun on the bike. When we stopped for our peanutbutter sandwiches we saw the trailer and motorhome for the guys from American Chopper (Discovery Channel bike builders). Obviously headed to Sturgis as well. This day we estimated that at least 80% of the vehicles we saw were bikes, cars or RV's towing bikes or others obviously headed to the Rally.

On the way to our hotel in Rapid City, we rode through he Bandlands, am area of land eroded over time by wind and rain exposing layers of sedimentary rock and fossilized remains dating back millions of years. We stopped briefly at the visitor center where we saw fossils from sea life and an alligator among other things. Actually I checked this out while Debbie was buying postcards or something... Anyway this was a beautiful place to ride as we had heard, though it was hot, that seems to be a repeating theme, though we have still been lucky with the weather. No rain to speak of other than Florida and a little in Nashville and Kentucky.

After leaving the Badlands we stopped in Wall SD only because several people said it was one of the places to go and we had been seeing signs for Wall Drugs for 200 miles. As it turns out the Drugstore IS the town, or at least the main business and attraction of Wall. Though there is not much to see or do other than buy souvenir's for this town that no one has heard of it was full of bikes and cars.

Arrived at the hotel, unpacked and decided to take time to ride into Sturgis to check it out. Downtown is very much like Daytona during bike week except cleaner and not quite so crowded. Unlike Main Street in Daytona, the sidewalks were wide and you could easily walk around without much trouble. We found the Main Street web cam and called a few relatives so they could see for themselves we were still alive and well. Adam sent the picture to the left.
a picture and I added it to the South Dakota pictures.

Later, back at the hotel we met a couple (Geri and Wayne) in the bar. They were very nice people, as are most that we meet while riding. They had come from Colorado that day, and as we talked it seemed they had been everywhere and done it all at one time or another. They bought us drinks, recommeded some rides locally, and places to eat.
